Int’l Routes Lead Delta Air Lines Inc. Out of Bankruptcy
Delta Air Lines Inc. attributed an increase in profitable international routes to its April 30 emergence from bankruptcy.
“International played a big part in Delta’s ability to emerge from Chapter 11 so quickly,” said John Parkerson, general attorney with Delta Air Lines Inc.’s law department, who helped open international flights for the company during its 19-month restructuring plan.
Delta’s operational improvements have focused on enhancing the customer experience and creating a stronger, more balanced network as a result of the addition of more than 60 new international routes.
“In just over 19 months we have undertaken the largest international expansion in Delta’s history,” Jim Whitehurst, Delta’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.
Delta is adding international flights at a faster rate than any other major U.S. airline, according to the company. Currently Delta operates flights to 32 trans-Atlantic destinations and more than 600 weekly flights to 58 destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Delta’s restructuring success builds on more than five years of change at Delta that has delivered more than $8 billion in annual cost and revenue improvements to the company.

Int’l Operations Keep UPS Afloat in First Quarter
Atlanta-based United Parcel Service Inc.’s first-quarter net income dropped to $843 million or 78 cents per share, from $975 million, or 89 cents per share a year earlier.
The company attributed its first-quarter drop in earnings to a slow domestic economy but said that growth in international markets helped cushion the slow U.S. economy.
“Strong gains in our international package and supply chain and freight businesses helped offset the impact of a slowing U.S. economy,” Mike Eskew, UPS chairman and CEO said in a statement.
UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide and plans to expand its international operations.
“We will continue to invest aggressively to seize the growth opportunities created by the rise in global trade,” said Mr. Eskew.
In early April, UPS and the Chinese government opened the way for construction of UPS’s International Air Hub at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai. The facility is to be operational sometime next year.
UPS ended its first quarter with $2.4 billion in cash and marketable securities.

Researchers at Georgia Tech are currently developing lightweight, shock-resistant and adaptive materials that could be applied to next-generation aircraft.
At the same time, EADS also donated $70,000 to Stanford University to support computer modeling research, which is becoming increasingly important in the design and development of aircraft.
EADS is headquartered in Munich, Germany, and Paris, with a North American subsidiary headquartered in Washington.
In 2006, the company also established scholarships at universities in the Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina.
