With a show of hands, members of a student-led green committee at the Atlanta International School handed down their unanimous verdict: Atlanta has a transportation problem.

But there’s hope for frustrated motorists traversing the clogged highways of the Georgia capital, they said. With better planning and extended public transportation, officials can solve the city’s traffic woes and greatly improve quality of life.

The environmentally conscious students presented exhibitions at a March conference where some 40 delegates from nine international cities shared knowledge and practices on public transit and green space.

Students from the international school come from 60 countries, and they all share an interest in bettering the environment around the world and in their own locales, Trevor Pendergast, a teacher, told GlobalAtlanta.

The students showed off their projects at a luncheon on the roof of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, which hosted the conference along with CIFAL Atlanta and the City of Atlanta.

Just before the event, they shared with GlobalAtlanta a variety of ways Atlanta could score some much-needed green points.

Cleaning up and extending the rail service of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, or MARTA, is a start, and promoting carpooling and bicycles would also help, they said.
