Atlanta-based humanitarian organization CARE celebrated its 62nd anniversary at the British Embassy in Washington on June 17.
The celebration continued at a series of dinners held June 19 at embassies throughout Washington to honor CARE representatives and their global contributions.
Sir Nigel Sheinwald, the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, welcomed Helene Gayle, CARE’s chief executive officer, and praised CARE’s efforts in 71 countries including the U.K. at the June 17 event.
He said that CARE is the second largest recipient of the U.K. Department for International Development’s funding, trailing only the British Red Cross. Under a six-year agreement signed in 2005, the department guaranteed funding of $6.3 million per year for the first three years.
More than 40 percent of the department’s support to CARE goes towards emergency and rehabilitation work, including relief for drought victims in Orissa, India; the food crisis in southern Africa and emergency water and health services in Iraq.
He also referred to joint projects in Angola and Zimbabwe in Africa and in Bangladesh and Bolivia.
While greeting UPS Foundation President Lisa M. Hamilton, he recalled his visit to the UPS headquarters in Atlanta earlier in June.
Mr. Sheinwald spoke at the Carter Center during his visit to Atlanta on conflict prevention and resolution. His remarks focused primarily on the Middle East and Africa.
