Brazilian Consulate Building Staff, Atlanta Presence

The Brazilian Consulate in Atlanta is building its staff in preparation for the beginning of its operations here within the next few months.

Through the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce of Georgia, the consulate is fielding applications for administrative office and housekeeping positions until May 2.

Applicants must be legal U.S. residents holding a permanent residency card or work permit.

Only applications returned electronically to consuladoatlanta@gmail.com will be accepted.

The consulate will also be hosting a breakfast May 9 in tandem with World Vision, a Christian organization dedicated to helping children in the developing world.  The event will take place from 8-10 a.m. at 3500 Lenox Rd. in Atlanta.

The Brazilian consul, Adalnio Senna Ganem, will speak on how the Brazilian community can provide support for humanitarian initiatives.  His speech will also shed light on the opening of the new consulate and its activities.

The consul is also set to make opening remarks at a multidisciplinary conference on Brazil at the University of Georgia on Friday, April 25.  Parties interested in attending should contact that Brazilian chamber.

UGA Partners With Another Chinese University

The University of Georgia announced on April 15 the signing of its second cooperative agreement with a Chinese university this month.

UGA officials formally inked the partnership with Nanjing University during Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue’s first business mission to China in early April.

The agreement was announced two weeks after an April 3 ceremony in Beijing during which Mr. Perdue and UGA provost Arnett Mace signed a similar partnership with Tsinghua University.

Like the Tsinghua deal, the new partnership will facilitate faculty and student exchanges and collaboration on research projects.  The agreement also could lay the groundwork for the training of Chinese government workers and public administration students at UGA’s Vinson Institute of Government.

Nanjing University is located in the city of Nanjing, the capital of eastern China’s Jiangsu province.  The modern school was founded in 1915 and was the first co-educational university there as well as the first to offer doctoral degrees, according to a UGA press release.

Church’s Chicken Opened 40 Overseas Stores Last Year

Of the 99 total new franchises Atlanta-based Church’s Chicken opened in 2007, 40 were in international markets.

The chicken chain, which goes by the name Texas Chicken in all overseas markets outside the Americas, has undertaken an aggressive international expansion strategy that has led to acquisitions in the U.K., with new stores opening there and in Russia in recent months.

The first Texas Chicken franchise is set to open in India this summer, and the company plans to establish 47 more restaurants total by the end of 2008, according to a recent press release.

Arcapita Inc., a Bahrain-based investment firm with an office in Atlanta, purchased Church’s from AFC Enterprises Inc., which owns competitor Popeye’s Chicken, in 2004.

Since the acquisition, Church’s has focused on positioning itself better in overseas markets.  The chain began expanding internationally in the late 1970s and now has 400 restaurants in 18 countries.
