TROY University Seeks Summer ESL Students from Consulates, Companies

The ten-week term of TROY University’s Atlanta Site begins on Tuesday, May 27, with nine graduate and undergraduate programs, including an English as a Second Language, or ESL, program.

Kathy Ellis, marketing coordinator for the ESL programs, told GlobalAtlanta that the university is especially seeking more students for its English language programs from corporations, consulates and trade offices in metro Atlanta.

The university offers six levels of academic and professional English ranging from beginner to very advanced.

“Our ESL program is exceptional,” she said, “because our placement exam looks closely at a variety of skills including speaking, grammar, reading, writing and listening. The courses are then designed specifically for each student according to the various scores.”

An individual who has a good speaking facility but poor writing ability may be placed in advanced speaking and lower writing tracks, she said.

“Through these kinds of adjustments, students are not caught in only one specific level,” she added.

Ms. Ellis said that the university already had students enrolled from the Mexican Consulate General and has formed business relationships with the Brazilian and Peruvian consulates and would like to enroll students from other consulates and foreign trade offices as well as foreign-owned corporations.

In addition, TROY also is teaching international students from a large number of countries including Brazil, Chile, China, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Peru, Russia, South Korea and Syria, some of whom hold F-1 student visas.

The Atlanta site campus, located at 1117 Perimeter Center West in Dunwoody, is one of more than 60 sites in 17 U.S. states and 11 nations.

Since the 1950s, TROY has had an extensive relationship with the U.S. military providing extension courses at bases around the world.

It currently has locations abroad in China, Germany, Guam, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

GE Energy Building Technology Center in Saudi Arabia

GE Energy, the Atlanta-based energy arm of General Electric Co., recently broke ground on a $75 million Power Technology Center in Dammam, Saudi Arabia

GE is teaming with longstanding joint-venture partner Ali A. Tammami Co. on the project, a 125,000-square-foot service center providing support for GE’s expanding operations in the Middle East.

The center is set to open in phases but should be fully operational by 2010.  When completed, the project will double the number of GE service technologists in the region.

GE will provide customer service response for gas turbine problems through various partnerships with Saudi companies.  GE employs 750 people throughout the Middle East and has 1017 gas turbines installed in the region.

Atlanta Software Company Opens Mexico Office

To further develop its growing business in Mexico, metro Atlanta-based software company Bitam has opened an office in the city of Guadalajara

Bitam, which provides Enterprise Performance Management software for clients in more than 18 countries, invested several million dollars last year to open a “data factory” in the city, which is considered a sort of “Silicon Valley” in Mexico because of its high density of graduates in the information technology field.

The new office will be run by Manuel Lopez, Bitam’s chief operating officer.  He believes that in a few years, the Guadalajara data factory will reach a level of success similar to the company’s facility in Tampico, Mexico, which opened in 2000.
