Gov. Perdue Launches Cultural Exchange Group’s Atlanta Chapter

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue on Aug. 14 launched an Atlanta chapter of People to People International, an organization that promotes cultural understanding through the exchange of ideas and experiences.

President Dwight Eisenhower founded the group in 1956.

Mary Eisenhower, People to People’s president and CEO and Mr. Eisenhower’s granddaughter, was on hand for the opening at the Atlanta offices of law firm Alston & Bird LLP.

She said she was excited that a new chapter is taking root in Georgia, where in the past she lived for nearly a decade.

Mr. Perdue is the honorary chair for the chapter, which is seeking new members from the greater Atlanta community.  It has already named officers and established an advisory board.

Nine presidents, including George W. Bush, have been honorary chairs of People to People’s national organization.  The People to People International awards program has been used to recognize leaders and their contribution to world peace.

Its world headquarters is in Kansas City, Mo.
