Non-Native Speakers Invited to Gwinnett English Program

Non-native speakers looking to practice English can participate in a free program at five branches of the Gwinnett County Public Library system.

No registration is required for the “Let’s Talk!” program, a 10-week course aimed at improving speaking skills and turning passive knowledge of the English language—reading and listening—into active conversation.

The program is free.  Groups will meet from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on different days of the week depending on the branch.  Meetings are to be held at Lawrenceville and Centerville branches Mondays, Lilburn on Tuesdays, Norcross on Wednesdays and Suwannee on Thursdays.

Census reports show that 30 percent of the nearly 800,000 Gwinnett County residents speak a language other than English at home, and half of those say they don’t speak English well.

Global Artists Compete for Savannah Guitar Company’s Prize

Savannah-based guitar and drum manufacturer Gretsch Co. celebrated its 125th anniversary by hosting an online competition among unsigned artists.

Nearly 900 artists from the Canada, France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom and the U.S. entered the contest by uploading their original performances at www.gretsch125th.com

In July, 55,000 online votes narrowed the field down to 10 artists, before a panel of celebrity judges picked three winners based on stage presence, performance and press kit quality.

Colourslide, a Gainesville, Fla., band, took home the grand prize and will perform at Gretsch’s 125th anniversary concert in New York City on Nov. 18.

Gretsch started as small musical instrument shop in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1883.
